It’s that time of the year again, for you to choose your Discovery Health plan choice for 2016. If you have received this mail, you should be a Discovery Health member, if not, my apologies. Please take the time to read all the material provided by Discovery Health as you have until mid-December to make your plan choice for 2016.
On average Discovery Health premiums will increase by 8.6% for 2016. This is below the industry average and in line with their aim of headline inflation plus 3%. They are launching a new plan for 2016 called the Smart Plan which will be a purely electronic plan – electronic membership cards, preferred providers such as doctors, pharmacies and hospitals. It will offer 200% in-hospital cover at 32 private hospitals; unlimited doctors’ visits and acute medication at their preferred provider. There is a co-payment of R50 per doctor visit and R10 per item of prescribed medication. Look out for more information from Discovery Health in the coming month.
Discovery aims to keep people healthy and enhance their lifestyles. They have done this successfully through their wellness programme – Vitality. Discovery Health medical scheme members claim 27% less for in-hospital costs than other schemes in the industry. Within the Discovery Health membership base they have found that their active members claim 17% less for in-hospital costs than their inactive members. Their aim therefore is to get members moving and more physically engaged. They will be doing this by rewarding members for achieving their weekly fitness goals, in the form of drinks at either Vida or Kauai.
To measure ones physical activity, members can either use their own wearable device, or an Apple watch from Discovery Health. In order to get the watch you need to be a member of Vitality and have a Discovery Credit card. The watch is essentially free unless you do not achieve your weekly goals then you will pay a monthly fee for the Apple watch. It is simple I guess – achieve the weekly goals and get a Vida or Kauai voucher, if not, get no voucher and have to pay for the Apple watch.
