Born between 1965 and 1980 they have been influenced by their parents who either both worked or were single parents and learnt from a young age to fend for themselves. They are “doers” and believe in getting things done.
Barack Obama and Jennifer Lopez are both Generation Xers and like many others of this generation, saw their parents retrenched and lied to by politicians. They are also the first generation who will not be as well off as their parents as they treasure work- life balance.
They are balanced, entrepreneurial, fun and pragmatic. Different to the Baby Boomers they seek work-life balance and are suspicious of the Baby Boomers. They are self-reliant and sceptical. They think globally as they were young adults when the technological age was birthed.
They are not organizationally loyal; are well educated and independent. They are so independent that they may ignore leadership, are unimpressed with authority and are often self-starters.
Unlike the Baby Boomer they believe in saving. They are cautious and save, save, save. This is great news for economies and business as the Baby Boomers are starting to retire and the new leaders are Generation X. We might see a change in government policies as the emphasis is put back onto saving and less on spending.
